In June 1985, one woman had a dream. Helen Stuckings, already an award-winning hair stylist, opened her first salon in Maitland, NSW. Over thirty seven years later, Inspirations Hair Design is still going strong.

Inspirations Hair Design employs a team of 9 hairdressers, a makeup artist and a beauty therapist. We are able to help women and men style themselves from head to toe, producing beautiful looks for weddings, special occasions and every day.

Whether you’re looking for a day of pampering “just because” or you need a beautiful look for your big day, you’ll never be disappointed at Inspirations Hair Design.

About Helen Stuckings

Helen Stuckings has been a talented hairstylist since 1983 and a salon owner since 1985. Her talent and hard work helped her make a name for herself very early in her career. In 1984, as a second-year apprentice, she won her first ‘Top Colourist of the Year’ award at the Newcastle/Hunter Tafe Awards. That same year, she won her first hair competition trophy: 1st place in the ‘Inspirational Section’ for long hair up-style. It was this triumph that led her to name her salon Inspirations Hair Design.

Over the course of her career, Helen has won numerous trophies. She still loves to compete to motivate her staff and to keep up to date with all of the latest trends. She also loves to share her talent and her knowledge. She has trained over 25 apprentices, including a World Skills gold medallist in The Hunter in 1999. Recently, she helped train a World Skills hairdressing entrant for The Hunter in 2012. She is also a mentor and a motivational speaker at schools, and one of her passions is giving back to the community by donating her services, skills, gifts and her love of singing. If she’s putting a smile on someone else’s face, she’s putting one on her face, too.

Helen continues to enhance her own education even as she trains her apprentices and runs her business. In 2009 she went to Amsterdam, and she achieved her master’s degree diploma in hair colouring with Keune Australia. She also received a ‘distinction’ qualification in ‘Certificate IV Hairdressing/Training and Assessment’ at Hunter Institute of Tafe.

In past years, Helen spent much of her time travelling around Australia and overseas. She teaches and displays her skills in long hair up-styling for Alfaparf Australia Company. She creates elegant, avant-garde, classical and modern trends for up-styles and hairdos. She loves a challenge and thinking outside the square with hair. One of her mottos is, “Develop a passion for learning, and if you do, you will never cease to grow your own passion.”

Helen’s Favourite Apprentice

One of the best parts of owning Inspirations Hair Design for Helen was the opportunity to give something back to the man who already gave her so much: her father, Robert.

At the age of 44, Robert was made redundant at Hunter Valley Shorthand Electricity Company after labouring for them for 26 years. However, Robert had always loved hair care and styling, and he had done wedding hair and hairdos at home on the weekends. That’s where Helen got her passion. He also had a little barber shop in the lunch room at the Council, so he had a head start on the practical skills versus most of the apprentices he went to Tafe with.

But there was a problem: Robert was illiterate, with no reading and writing skills. Helen helped him, and in the first 2 years of his apprenticeship he learnt to read and write. He eventually finished his Tafe qualifications with a ‘high distinction’.

Now, 27 years later, Robert is still doing his passion: hairdressing. Whether he’s helping Helen out at the salon, or visiting the elderly or sick in their homes, hospital or nursing home, he does it all for the love of it. He loves hair care as much today as when he first picked up a pair of clippers at the age of 15.
